Flights of Fancy

Lee Tian Ying
Malaysia

Tian Ying is a Malaysian designer who discovered fashion through art, inspired by dusty troves of preserved second hand kimonos that were layered with embroidered tales and crafted from precious woven silks. Because of her love for storytelling and craft work, Tian Ying enjoys exploring works of paradoxical natures, seeking to find a rhythm within them.

In menswear, the tailored suit is regarded as a timeless garment and symbol of hegemonic masculinity, embodying the traditional concepts of stability, status and authority. However, the development of sartorial tastes and the shifting of embedded values in materials and forms is challenging these models of masculinity and modern tailoring techniques.

Flights of Fancy seeks to explore the liminal space that exists at the sartorial borders through the exploration of the rigidity of traditional suiting juxtaposed against the layered playfulness of birds - classic patterns that are overlaid and patched together to form new stripes and silhouettes.
